I recently bought the Spektrum DX6i remote for RC planes and helicopters. To avoid damaging my RC helicopter on the first flight, I decided to practice on the computer first. There is a cross platform RC simulator called Heli-X which works on Windows and OSX. With Heli-X you can fly helicopters and quadcopters. I use the demo version since the time limit of 10 minutes is enough.
I needed to connect my Spektrum DX6i to my Mac computer. Therefore I ordered an USB Simulator Cable for Futaba JR FS R/C Remotes for $ 7,51 at DealExtreme. With this device you are able to connect your Spektrum DX6i to OSX or Windows computers. Although it comes with a driver cd, both OSX and Windows 7 autodetect the device.
First add a new plane profile to your Spektrum DX6i (as shown in the picture above). Although you fly with a heli, it turned our that configuring a heli profile mix up the controls.
You do not need to turn on your Spektrum DX6i, it will auto turn on when connected to the USB trainer. Insert the USB trainer in your computer and connect the other end to the bottom of your Spectrum DX6i where it says “TRAINER”. You will notice the USB trainer is blinking in red.
Start Heli-X and choose Configuration -> Controller.
A configuration screen appears
Click on the Sticks button.
A new screen appears:
Make sure all the sticks are in their centre position and choose Next.
Move both sticks to their minimum and maximum positions and choose Next.
Now move the left stick up (maximal collective pitch) and back to the center and choose Next.
Move the right stick to the right (maximum cyclic roll right) and back to the centre and choose Next.
Now move the right stick up (cyclic pitch forward) and back to the centre and choose Next.
Move the left stick to the left (rudder maximal left) and back to the centre and choose Next.
You are done. Choose Finish.
If everything is configured well, your screen should look like this screenshot. Choose Save to save your configuration. You might need to restart Heli-X in order to make the new configuration work.
